In 1861, thirty one million people lived in the United States. The economic and political development of the North and South were so dramatically different that only a long and bloody war could create one nation. The two sections also developed differently with regard to the rules of love, sex and marriage. An understanding of these differences is an invaluable aid in helping to understand the social development of the United States.
